Electric Stimulation and Therapy
Electric Stimulation
A therapeutic process whereby the nerves or muscles are stimulated by electricity. This technique is especially beneficial to people suffering with chronic pain e.g. as nerve stimulation above the skin (TENS). The various electric therapies use the effects of electric stimulation in the broadest sense.
Electrotherapy
Physiotherapeutic treatment with electric current.
There are various different methods depending on the type of electricity:
- In the low frequency range DC (up to 1000 Hz) are galvanisation, iontophoresis and electric stimulation therapy.
- Mid frequency range alternating currents (1000-10000 Hz) uses interferential current therapy.
- In the case of high frequency therapy (over 10000 Hz), the heating effects of electromagnetic waves are used.
Electrotherapy is applied primarily to relieve the pain that accompanies tendon, joint and muscle diseases e.g. arthritis or rheumatic conditions.
